Roles of Observation Ward in Emergency Department

Observation unit is essential part of modern Emergency Department (ED)

It is a valuable tool for save and efficient management of patients in ED

Criteria

1. Run by ED staff

2. Separate but close to ED

3. Specific policies

4. Admitting right only by ED staff not by other department

5. Time limited - not exceed certain times waiting before admission to ward

6. Frequent round

7. Preferential access to lab, x-ray and CT scan

Roles

1. Diagnostic

2. Therapeutic- pain management, hydration etc

3. Social support - lodging problem,temporary shelter

4. Safety net-frequent round avoid unnecessary admission & discharge

5 .Improving patient flow (Buffer zone)-awaiting for admission

Effects:

1.Increase efficiency of ED and hospital

2.Reduce in appropriate discharge from ED

3 Reduce hospital admission
